This was a great adventure. The crew for this one was Eva and Javi (who live in Spain) and myself. I was keen to try canyoning in Spain after doing it in a couple of locations in New Zealand. We did our research and decided to go with Guias Malouco, which is 30 – 40 min away from Ourense and an easy 1 hour drive from Santiago de Compostela.
Our guide was Freddy, the owner. He was funny and considerate, and able to speak a bit of English, so that made it easy for me because I speak zero Spanish! We started by getting into our wetsuits and helmets, which are provided by Freddy. The only thing we had to provide was our own shoes.
To get to the canyon it was a 10 min drive to small village, then a lovely walk through a forest for about 20 minute. By the time we arrived at the river we were all boiling! So the cold water in the canyon was so nice and refreshing. We started with a slide into the stream and made our way along, saying “hi” to all the bugs and frogs along the way. After several small jumps and slides we arrived at a hole in a big rock. To move forward, we had to jump in the hole and swim through, which was exciting.
Then came the big drop! For the first section we had to rappel down to a small jumping platform. After the jump there was a rope descent down. This was part climb, part abseil down a five storey waterfall. We slid down on our sides for part of it which was really fun. Overall, it was a really exciting adventure. It was an adrenaline rush in some parts and really relaxing and pretty in others. Throughout the adventure we felt very safe and well looked after by our guide. Thanks Freddy!
