This cave I found through a course I did with Wintec in Hamilton, with my instructor Shannon leading the class. Recently I decided to revisit it and show it to my girlfriend, Kirsten. Getting to the spot was very challenging as there was no signage on the gravel road to tell you the whereabouts of the cave entrance. So I reached wayyy back in my memory, and I managed to find the spot to park on the side of the gravel road, and managed to find the secret track that headed into the bush. Once on the track I knew that I needed to find a lead off the main track which turned left. I found it but only just, as it wasn’t very clear. This then led us to a stream that we followed up to a waterfall, which we climbed up and found the cave entrance.
We decided to explore the cave for about 2 hours with our map of the cave, which was super helpful. So off we went exploring the cave. We loved the clear crystal water we found coming from the many waterfalls. My highlight was climbing up a wee waterfall which was about 3 m high, a nice little challenge. We saw many glow worms in the cave and many stalagmites and stalactites which were very spiky and all different shapes and sizes and amazing to look at. We also found a side tunnel off the main cave which went for ages and was interesting to explore.
Overall it was fun to adventure together and also good to find the parking spot, bush entry, and cave. You can get guided through this cave at this website.https://www.waitomocaves.com/education-centre/adventure-caving/. This is a easy cave to explore, excellent for familys and beginners as no big drops and no rope needed.
