The caves are situated around a 20 minute drive from Raglan, located in the limestone valley called “Karamu Caves”. The whole caving adventure from start to finish is 4 hours (including the drive). It is rather cold to do in winter and I would suggest bringing a 3/2 wetsuit.
Overall, it is so amazing! The caving makes you feel like you entered another world, with stalagmites coming up from the ground and stalactites hanging from the ceiling. In some parts of the cave it was like a scene from Indiana Jones! We saw huge boulders and rushing water through parts of the cave. Some parts are really tight and you have to squeeze through, which is exciting.
One part of the caving led to a big amphitheatre room in the cave, with a high ceiling and stalagmites hanging down. Gareth (the lead guide) told us people would bring instruments to play here because the sound generated in this area was amazing due to the cave structure. He also said that some people stay the night in the caves (just for something different to do)!
During some parts of the caving we had the option to hold our breaths and go under different parts of the rocks underwater and then we would pop out the other side. This was challenging because although it was easy to do, it was scary not knowing where you would pop out.
